The short answer: follow the product's storage directions, keep food in its original package, protect it from moisture and pests, and retain the lot number and best-by date. Stop using a product that looks or smells abnormal; if your pet becomes ill, contact a veterinarian.
Storage checklist
- Read and follow the manufacturer's storage directions.
- Keep dry food in its original bag. If you use a storage container, place the whole bag inside rather than pouring loose food into it.
- Close packages securely and store them where pets and children cannot access them unsupervised.
- Keep the product name, UPC, lot number and best-by date until the package is finished.
- Wash and fully dry food bowls and storage containers according to their care instructions before refilling them.
- Do not use packaging that is swollen, leaking, damaged, unusually discolored or has an abnormal odor.
If something appears wrong
Stop feeding the product and preserve the packaging. Record the purchase location and date, lot information and what you observed. Contact the manufacturer and use the FDA's reporting guidance when appropriate. If a pet appears sick or injured, contact a veterinarian promptly.
